I would like to start this week, introducing to you an artist I LOVE.
today I'll share with you a little talk with Julia, of JuliaSmithCeramics
Succede così: nelle settimane scorse decido di fare un giretto nel grande mondo di Etsy, non ricordo se cercassi proprio delle ceramiche o se stessi cercando altro, fatto sta' che incappo nel negozio di Julia, ceramista scozzese di Inverness e resto rapita dalle sue ceramiche, così decido all'istante di acquistare alcune delle sue tazze.
Io che adoro la ceramica, io che adoro QUESTA ceramica, quest'arte: grezza, ma di una finezza straordinaria, non posso resistere, mi vedo già con una delle sue tazze in mano a bere un tè fumante....
This is how the went: a few weeks ago, I decided to have a look for nice shops on Etsy, I do not remember whether I was looking for ceramics precisely, or something else, the fact is that I run into Julia's shop, Scottish potter from Inverness and I remained positively dumbfounded before her ceramics. I immediately placed my order.
I could not resist it, because I love pottery, I love THIS pottery, this art which looks so simple but is so extraordianarily refined. I could already see myself holding one of Julia's cups with a hot tea...
Un paio di settimane più tardi ricevo il mio pacchetto, lo ricevo in ufficio e non c'è modo migliore di iniziare la giornata. Le tazze di Julia sono uno spettacolo, sono addirittura più belle di come le ricordassi sul sito ed è amore. Le mando un mail ringraziandola, dicendole che ero in estasi, lei risponde carinamente, ringraziandomi a sua volta e così le chiedo se le posso inviare qualche domanda per un post da pubblicare sul mio blogghino e lei accetta entusiasta.
A couple of weeks later I received my order in a beautifully decored parcel directly at my office...my day could not start in a better way. Julia's cups were amazingly beautiful, even better than how I remembered them. It's love.
I send her a mail saying thank you, she answers in a sweet way thanking me in return and I ask her if she would like to be featured in my little blog, she says YES, I'm delighted!

Here below my interview to Julia, who I want to thank fondly.
Me: When did it all start? Is this for pottery a passion you’ve always had or is it something you’ve developed later in your life?
Julia: I discovered ceramics whilst I was studying Product Design at art school when I was 18 years old. I discovered through doing the design course that it wasn’t suited to me and I was more drawn to materials and making. I had never made anything in clay before then but when I visited the ceramic department I knew it was where I wanted to be.
Io: Quand'è iniziato tutto? Questa passione per la ceramica è qualcosa che nasce fin da bambina o che hai sviluppato più tardi nella tua vita?
Julia: Ho scoperto la ceramica mentre studiavo Product Design all'Istituto d'Arte, all'età di 18 anni. E' stato durante il corso di design che ho capito che non faceva per me e che mi sentivo più portata verso i materiali e la manualità. Non avevo mai costruito nulla in creta, ma appena ho messo piede nel laboratorio di ceramica, ho capito subito che era li che volevo stare.
Me: How did you discover this particular type of ceramic?
Julia: I used to teach pottery classes so I learned to throw on the pottery wheel to enable me to teach others. Pretty quickly I got the bug for it and wanted to do it more and more.
Io: Come sei arrivata a questo particolare tipo di ceramica?
Julia: Tenevo corsi di ceramica e quindi ho dovuto imparare a usare il tornio per poter insegnare agli altri, presto mi ci sono appassionata e non sono più riuscita a smettere.
Me: Is it correct to call it Raku, or is it a different one?
Julia: No I make functional pottery which is fired in an electric kiln. I love Raku but you can’t make pots food-safe firing in that way as the temperature does not get high enough to make the pottery non-porous. The process of raku-firing is pulling the pots out of a kiln when they are red hot with tongs and smothering them with sawdust in a container. It can create wonderful flashes of colour in the glazes and smoky black marks on the raw clay but the results are unpredictable which can make it exciting!
Io: E' corretto chiamare questo tipo di lavorazione Raku? O è una lavorazione diversa?
Julia: Io produco ceramiche per usi domestici, cotte in fornaci elettriche. Amo la ceramica Raku, ma non si possono produrre tazze/contenitori per uso alimentare in Raku perché la cottura non raggiunge alte temperature e questo non rende la ceramica non porosa. Il processo di cottura della ceramica Raku, prevede che gli oggetti siano tolti dalla fornace quando sono incandescenti per mezzo di alcune pinze e vengano ricoperti con segatura in un recipiente. Questo processo può creare fantastiche venature di colori in fase di finitura, ma i risultati sono imprevedibili, il che può essere certo molto eccitante!
Me: How do you decide the subjects (decorations) for your pottery?
Julia: My illustrations are simple, mostly of animals, birds, trees and bikes. I like small details and colour and the illustrated prints are a great way for me to add that against my natural muted glazes.
Io: Come decidi i soggetti (elementi decorativi) per le tue ceramiche?
Julia: Le mie illustrazioni sono semplici, riguardano soprattutto gli animali, gli uccelli, gli alberi e le biciclette. Mi piacciono i piccoli dettagli e il poco colore e i disegni di questo genere ben si accompagnano ai colori naturali delle mie ceramiche.
Me: What’s your favourite piece?
Julia: At the moment my favourite is my windy tree mugs and jugs.
Io: Qual è il tuo pezzo preferito?
Julia: In q1uesto momento è windy tree mugs and jugs. (le tazze con l'albero mosso dal vento)
Me: What’s the piece you haven’t dared producing yet?
Julia: A tea pot. There are so many considerations I find it a bit overwhelming. A perfect tea pot has to pour well (no dribbles), the handle has to be strong enough to support the weight when it’s full and be in proportion and the lid has to stay on when the tea pot tilts. One day I will be brave and make a tea pot.
Io: Qual é il pezzo che non hai ancora osato produrre?
Julia: Una teiera. Ci sono talmente tante cose da tener presenti per farla che, finora, l'ho trovato sopra le mie possibilità. Una teiera perfetta deve poter versare bene (non gocciolare); il manico dev'essere abbastanza forte per sostenerne il peso quando è piena ed essere al contempo proporzionato e il coperchietto deve star su quando si versa il té.Un giorno prenderò coraggio e farò una teiera!
Me: What courses/art school did you attend or would you recommend?
Julia: I attended Glasgow School of Art for my training but unfortunately the course no longer runs. Tragically most art schools in the UK have closed their ceramics departments down. There is a great interest in pottery learning here though and some potters offer short courses or apprenticeships. I am still learning and sometimes attend masterclasses, this year I will be visiting Eric Landon at Tortus Copenhagen in Denmark to learn how to throw very tall pieces.
Io: Quali corsi/scuole hai frequentato e ti sentiresti di suggerire?
Julia: Per imparare ho frequentato La Glasgow School of Art, ora il corso di ceramica non esiste purtroppo più. sfortunatamente la maggior parte delle scuole d'arte nel Regno Unito hanno soppresso i corsi di ceramica. Tuttavia l'interesse per la ceramica qui è molto alto e alcuni ceramisti offrono corsi di breve durata e stages. io sto ancora imparando e talvolta partecipo a corsi di perfezionamento, quest'anno ad esempio sarò all' Eric Landon at Tortus Copenhagen in Danimarca, dove imparerò a lavorare al tornio pezzi molto alti.
Me: When did you decide to open your shop and how’s it going?
Julia: I opened my Etsy shop in 2008 and it’s being going really well. Something I never anticipated was the number of international sales I would make. I love that I can work away in my little studio in a small village in the Highlands of Scotland and have connections with people on the other side of the world. I also sell my work at shows around the UK and make more sculptural pots for exhibitions.
Io: Quando hai deciso di aprire il tuo negozio online e come sta andando?
Julia: Ho aperto il mio Shop su Etsy nel 2008 e da allora va molto bene. Una cosa che non avrei mai saputo prevedere è la quantità di vendite internazionali che avrei fatto. Mi piace il fatto di poter lavorare dal mio piccolo laboratorio, in un paesino delle Highlands Scozzesi ed essere in contatto con persone dall'altra parte del mondo. Vendo i miei prodotti anche in fieri in giro per il Regno Unito e per le fiere produco più ceramiche-scultura.
Me: What shows are you attending or will you attend in the future?
Julia: I will be at Potfest Scotland in June, Tent London in September and in a group exhibition at the Artichoke Gallery in April. I am applying for other shows at the moment so should know soon what the rest of the year holds.
Io: A quali fiere partecipi ora o parteciperai in futuro?
Julia: sarò al Potfest Scotland in Giugno, al Tent London in Settembre e sarò parte di collettiva di artisti presso l' Artichoke Gallery in Aprile. Sono in attesa di ricevere risposta da altri eventi, così saprò presto come si articolerà il resto dell'anno.
Me: What future do you hope for Julia Smith Ceramics?
Julia: In February I will have a new studio building which will give me the opportunity to expand a little. The new space will be for hand-building larger sculptural pots, experimenting with printing on clay and there will be a pristine corner for working with porcelain. My long term hopes are that lovely people keep wanting to buy my pottery so I can keep making and making.
Io: Quale futuro ti auguri per Julia Smith Ceramics?
Julia: In Febbraio inizieranno i lavori per la costruzione del mio nuovo studio e questo mi permetterà di allargarmi un pochino. Qui ci sarà lo spazio per oggetti più grandi, potrò cimentarmi nella decorazione sull'argilla e ci sarà un posto "immacolato" per lavorare la porcellana. Sul lungo periodo, spero che le persone continuino a voler acquistare le mie ceramiche così io potrò continuare a farne ancora e ancora!
Termina qui la mia intervista a Julia, andatela a trovare ne suo shop, se amate la ceramica, resterete colpite dalla sua bravura, dalla bellezza dei suoi pezzi.
io ormai sono perduta, è già ora del mio prossimo ordine, delle tazzine da caffé...e chissà che riesca a conoscerla di persona la prossima estate!
